Die-hard Elon Musk fans are never at a loss for unexpected products from the billionaire business mogul. What would society be today without The Boring Company's "Not-A-Flamethrower," the Tesla carbon-fiber surfboard or the $60 Cybertruck-shaped Cyberwhistle?
Those in search of their next uber-expensive fix need look no further than Tesla Mezcal, a surprise release announced on Thursday through the Tesla North America X account. Mimicking the lightning bolt-shaped design of 2020's Tesla Tequila (more on that later), the $450 liquor is distilled from a combination of Agave Espadin and Bicuishe, said to imbue smoky flavors of green apple, spice and chamomile.
Admittedly, tasting notes are probably the last thing anyone is interested in. Releases like Tesla Mezcal act first and foremost as glitzy showpieces, destined to be shown off on social media before being snatched up by third-party resellers in search of a lucrative flip.
The mezcal traces its inspiration back to 2018 when Musk teased fans with an improbable "Teslaquilla" as part of an April Fool's joke. Lo and behold, Musk eventually partnered with distiller Nosotros Tequila to roll out an añejo famously dubbed Tesla Tequila. An initial run of 20,000 bottles sold out within four hours. The billionaire later rereleased the bottle on April 20 with a groan-worthy price tag of $420.
Despite rabid fan-fare, Tesla Tequila was decidedly not a hit with spirits enthusiasts. It currently hovers around a 62 rating on Tequila Matchmaker, with reviewers primarily taking issue with its artificially overindulgent caramel and vanilla flavor.

Never one to listen to bad press, Musk later doubled down with the release of Tesla GigaBier. Brewed with an eyebrow-raising "exclusive strain of Cyberhops," the 7%-ABV lager was quickly coined the "world's worst beer" by Twitter users (back when Twitter was still called Twitter).
Tesla also sells shot glasses and beer mugs through its website.
All of that is to say, Tesla Mezcal has been a long time coming. Musk teamed back up with the makers of Tesla Tequila for release, reinterpreting the decanter with a smooth black sheen characteristic of many of his products. Collectors can pick it up online with shipping expected in the next three to six weeks. Be warned, however, that prices will likely increase sharply in months to come; Tesla Tequila is currently being hawked around the Internet for over $1,000.
