On Wednesday, El Tequileño rounded out the holidays with a re-release of its coveted 65th-anniversary extra añejo, first unveiled in November last year.
The tequila was crafted under the guidance of father and son duo Juan Antonio Salles and Jorge Antonio “Tony” Salles, the Gran Tequilero and master distiller at El Tequileño, respectively. Though not quite as old as the brand itself, the 40%-ABV release clocks in over a decade of age between the different components of its blend.
The distillate was split between three cask types before bottling. The oldest of the bunch was reportedly matured for four years and nine months in ex-Jack Daniel's whiskey barrels. Another was aged for three years in French Oak casks that previously held El Tequileño reserves, while the third spent four years and one month in unused French Oak.
The final product is said to boast flavors of rich cooked agave, toasted oak, salted caramel and stone fruit. If that sounds like your jam, be warned that supply is highly limited. The re-release has been limited to just 1,000 bottles, touching down in markets this month at a suggested retail price of $800 each.
“We begin with only the finest mature agave from Los Altos de Jalisco, carefully crafted to produce the best possible tequila,” Tony Salles of the extra añejo in a statement last year. “Our special Extra Añejo blend was a collaboration between my father and me. Three barrels of tequila, matured in French and American oak, were hand-selected for their unique flavor and character. These were carefully blended to create an Extra Añejo tequila with rich flavor and complexity.”
Each decanter comes packaged inside a box with a certificate of authenticity and bottle number. For more information, find the product page here.
