On Thursday, Elon Musk's fast-expanding alcohol empire returned with the re-release of Tesla Mezcal. The agave spirit, initially unveiled over the summer, follows in the steps of Tesla Tequila and Tesla GigaBier, all of which have shot to $1,000-plus on the resale market alongside questionably expensive favorites like the Tesla Surfboard and Cyberwhistle. Like its previous iteration, Tesla Mezcal is distilled from a combination of agave Espadin and Bicuishe said to imbue smoky flavors of green apple, spice and chamomile. The star (or rather, lightning bolt) of the show is a matte black decanter designed in the likeness of Tesla's ubiquitous logo. The liquor is set to debut on Dec. 12th in "highly limited quantities" at a suggested retail price of $450 through Flaviar.
“Working with Javier and the Tesla team on this project has been an incredible experience,” Nosotros founder Carlos Soto remarked. “Tesla Mezcal is more than a beverage; it’s a piece of art and a testament to shared values of sustainability.”
Both Tesla Tequila and Mezcal are produced by Nosotros, a small-batch agave spirits producer based in Jalisco, Mexico. Though we haven't tried either of their elusive billionaire-backed releases, we have tasted the brand's flagship Blanco and Reposado expressions, which clock in at a budget-friendly $45 and $50, respectively. From our experience, their recipe hinges on light and sweet flavors that deliver a smidge more custard than agave. Both are perfectly serviceable inside a cocktail. Find our reviews of the brand's Blanco and Reposado here and here. Musk's boozy side project dates back to 2018, when he teased fans with an improbable "Teslaquilla" as part of an April Fool's Joke. Less than two years later, the tech mogul debuted Tesla Tequila to rabid fanfare; bottles of the $250 spirit sold out within four hours. A re-release on April 20th notched the price up to $420, reigniting a resale firestorm that current hawks bottles to the tune of $2,000 and up. The oddball collection was soon followed by the unveiling of Tesla GigaBier and Tesla CyberBeer. Reception to these releases has been mixed, to say the least. Nonetheless, these products certainly don't lack demand, commanding prices of over $100 for empty bottles on eBay. Musk die-hards can also purchase a set of triangular shot glasses, a duo of mezcal copitas and an angular, Cybertruck-esque "CyberStein" mug. Consumer marketplace Flaviar has signed on as the tech, online marketing and fulfillment partner for the holiday re-release of Tesla Mezcal. If you're interested in picking up the collectible, find more information on the brand's website.
“At Flaviar, we’re inspired by the ecosystem Tesla has created through its groundbreaking innovations and are proud to be the trusted technology and fulfillment partner for Tesla Mezcal, delivering a customer experience that matches the exceptional quality of the product,” Josh Jacobs, SVP Strategic Partnerships at Flaviar, added. “As with Tesla Tequila and Beer before, we have seen the first batch of Tesla Mezcal fly off the shelves in June and we are positive this holiday restock will be no exception.”
