On Monday, Jack Daniel's unveiled a 14-year-old Tennessee whiskey, the distiller's oldest age-stated expression since Prohibition swept the nation in 1920. The bottling is set to drop alongside the latest batches of the storied distillery's 10- and 12-year whiskeys, all intended as a tribute to the brand's legacy. Just like the distiller's Old No. 7, Jack Daniel’s 14 Year Old is distilled from a masbhill of 80% corn, 12% malted barley and 8% rye at its facility in Lynchburg, Tennessee. However, quite unlike that flagship whiskey, the new expression is bottled at a blistering 63.15% ABV. The limited-edition drop will be made available later this month at a suggested retail price of $149.99 per 700-milliliter bottle.
“When we released our first Jack Daniel’s 10-Year-Old Tennessee Whiskey a few years ago, we set out to honor the legacy of Jack Daniel himself and replicate the lineup of age-stated whiskeys available during his time,” Jack Daniel's Master Distiller Chris Fletcher remarked in a news release. “This year’s releases build upon that as we re-introduce our new 14-Year-Old Tennessee Whiskey, the oldest age-statement for Jack Daniel’s in the last 100 years or more. "
The expression is said to boast flavors of sweet bakery spice, cinnamon, creamy butterscotch and leather that segue into aged oak and pipe tobacco. Placed side-by-side with Jack Daniel's original 14-year whiskey, you get an idea of just how far the distiller has come. Jack Daniel’s It's one of three releases featured in this year's Aged Series. The distiller will also be rolling out batch 3 of Jack Daniel's 12 Year Old, a 53.5%-ABV whiskey rich with flavors of tobacco and seasoned oak, as well as batch 4 of Jack Daniel's 10 Year Old, a 48.5%-ABV whiskey layered with dark fruit and bittersweet cocoa. These will have suggested retail prices of $94.99 and $84.99 per 700-milliliter bottle, respectively — although you'll be lucky to find them on shelves for anywhere near that price, particularly the 12-year-old expression. The release of JD 14 has been a long time in the making. Fans have been clamoring to taste the whiskey since last March, when Jack Daniel's labels for approval to the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau were discovered. Speculation surrounding these filings has fueled an extended hype cycle for many Jack Daniel's releases past and future. Last week, internet sleuths discovered that the distiller is planning its first whiskey aged exclusively in toasted barrels. If the trademark filing is to be believed, the 50%-ABV expression will likely roll out either this summer or fall. [callout-app-promo]
