On Tuesday, 1800 Tequila uncorked what may be its glitziest decanter to date — a painstakingly crafted glass basketball shoe designed to place liquor on its feet. Think of it like Cinderella's glass slipper with a boozy twist. The brand has partnered with artist Mr. Flower Fantastic to make the dream a reality ahead of NBA All-Star Weekend. Sculpted with sharp edges and textures inspired by the lanky stalks of agave plants, the decanter pays clear homage to iconic basketball shoe silhouettes of the 1980s like the Jordan 1 and Converse Star Tech. Pre-sale orders are slated to open on Feb. 13, each $225 decanter including a bottle of 1800 Cristalino with purchase. The piece fits neatly within Mr. Flower Fantastic's ever-growing portfolio. The New York-based artist specializes in colorful flower arrangements commissioned by the likes of Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Serena Williams and Michael Jordan. Over the years, he's created a number of glass planters designed in the likeness of famous Nike shoes like the Air Force 1.
“Working with 1800 Tequila was a deeply inspiring experience, as I was drawn to the story, culture, and passion behind the brand," Mr. Flower Fantastic said in a news release. "The decanter itself began with an exploration of light, inspired by the refracted angles of the crystal bottle. The design also honors the agave plant’s striking, geometric beauty, reflecting nature’s precision in every curve. Beyond its aesthetic, the decanter is a conversation starter as art often sparks dialogue."
1800 Tequila is no stranger to this kind of collaboration. The brand, owned by the same Proximo Spirits behind Jose Cuervo and Gran Centenario, has made it a mission to recruit artists for a laundry list of limited-edition releases. Last spring, 1800 tapped surrealist Pedro Friedeberg to put an embossed twist on the brand's Milenio extra añejo expression. A couple of years before that, 1800 unveiled an NFT designed by Leonora Carrington that began bidding at $25,000. Other releases debuted in its ongoing "Artist's Series" have recruited the work of renowned names like Keith Haring, Basquiat and Shepard Fairy.
