Last week, TX Whiskey announced the 11th iteration in its Experimental Series. This time around, the team has opted for a blend of 6-year-old rye, wheated bourbon and ryed bourbons bottled at a balmy 114 proof.
The expression, dubbed Lonestar Traditions, is described as a synthesis of bourbon's sweetness, rye whiskey's spice and ryed bourbon's depth. The brand says to expect notes of orange clove, raisins and nutmeg on the nose followed by flavors of holiday spice, cinnamon graham cracker crust and black tea on the palate.
Similar to past releases in the Experimental Series, the bottling clocks in at $39.99. However, only 950 bottles are being released to market, and you'll have to pick them up at the brand's Whiskey Ranch in Fort Worth, Texas, if you want to get a taste.
“When we were creating this expression, my goal was to showcase a blend of some of our most matured products, highlighting the unique impact of Texas seasons on each mashbill,” head blender Craig Blair remarked. “The marrying of these casks was carefully curated over time to ensure the final product spoke to what we were trying to convey. Leading into the holidays, we envisioned a blend with unique characteristics that elicit nostalgic thoughts of this season – fresh baked pies, cozy cups of ciders and the warmth of an evening fire.”
The past few releases in the Experimental Series have taken the brand in wildly different directions. In September, TX hopped on the burgeoning light whiskey trend with a 110-proof bottling distilled with a mashbill of 99% corn and 1% malted barley. Before that, the distiller uncorked an unaged White Dog — otherwise known as moonshine — bottled as hazmat proof.
Other editions in the backlog have recruited help from apricot brandy, sherry casks, cabernet barrels, cognac and more.
TX Whiskey was formed in 2012 by Leonard Firestone and Troy Roberston, who left behind careers in the corporate world to build a distillery on a renovated country club in Fort Worth.
