Last week, three-time NBA All-Star Domantas Sabonis forayed from the basketball court to the vineyard with a new venture alongside his wife, entrepreneur Shashana Sabonis.
The couple's wine brand, dubbed Ones by Sabonis, is being introduced with the launch of a 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon. Produced in small quantities using grapes grown in Napa Valley, the wine is reportedly aged for 21 months in 70% new French Oak barrels. In a fascinating, likely intentionally full-circle moment, production of the Cabernet is overseen by Joe Harden, an athlete turned vintner who used to play college basketball for UC Davis.
The wine — the first of many under the Ones By Sabonis label — is said to boast flavors of ripe blackberries, black cherry, sun-dried herbs, freshly ground espresso beans and delicate minerality.
From its molten wax-dipped cork to its understated label, the wine is being pitched as a decidedly premium product. The brand is offering just 600 bottles of this inaugural Cabernet Sauvignon, available for purchase online at a suggested retail price of $125.
“We’re so excited to introduce Ones to the world, a wine brand born out of our shared love of agriculture, quality time with our loved ones and the Napa community who have welcomed us with open arms,” Domantas and Shashana Sabonis remarked in a news release. “When people experience Ones, we want them to feel like they are a part of our close friends and family, with each sip enjoyed during quality time with their own.”
