On Wednesday, Texas-based Garrison Brothers Distillery commemorated the 10th anniversary of its lauded Cowboy Bourbon with one of its highest-proofed iterations to date.
Crafted by master distiller Donnis Todd before aging at least eight years, the uncut and unfiltered whiskey is said to balance a fruity palate of plums, rhubarb, cherry juice and cocoa powder. Though its mashbill has not been disclosed, previous releases have been rumored to boast 74% corn, 15% wheat and 11% malted barley.
Past editions of the spirit have varied in alcohol content from year to year, clocking in at 67.4% ABV in 2022 and 70.45% ABV in 2023. This year's release straddles the hazmat-proof fence at a scorching 70.1% ABV reminiscent of the "extreme Texas climate." Just 10,000 bottles will be made available to consumers in October at a suggested retail price of $279.99.
“This 10th anniversary release of Garrison Brothers Cowboy Bourbon is more than just a bottle—it's a tribute to the legacy of America’s national spirit and Garrison Brothers’ most coveted bourbon. It’s a nod to years of hard work and dedication blessed by the unmatched Texas terroir, all in the hands of our distiller, Donnis Todd,” Dan Garrison, founder of Garrison Brothers Distillery, remarked in a news release.
The expression has proved a consistent favorite in the distiller's portfolio. Garnering an impressive Raided Score® of 90, reviewers have commended Cowboy Bourbon's rich and oil mix blend of dark chocolate, black pepper, pecan pie and distinct toasted oak.
The only offering from the brand that ranks higher is its Limousin-oak seasoned Laguna Madre, though that one will cost you a hefty $400-$500 on the resale market.
Garrison Brothers is widely recognized as the first legal whiskey distillery in Texas. Suffice it to say that the brand is frequently eager to celebrate its Lone Star roots. In April, Garrison raised funds to protect Texas wildflowers through the return of its Lady Bird Bourbon; a few months later, the distillery successfully fundraised $100,000 to support local communities ravaged by wildfires.
"Crafting Garrison Brothers’ 10th anniversary edition of Cowboy Bourbon has been an incredible journey. Each barrel represents the spirit and determination of Texas, resulting in a bourbon that is both bold and unforgettable," master distiller Donnis Todd added.
