Hot off the release of its full proof bourbon, Green River Distilling Co. is taking a stab at the mixology market with a new expression tailored for bartenders.
Paying homage to the distiller's over-century-old roots, Green River 1885 Bourbon is made up of a mash bill of 76% corn, 15% rye and 9% malted barley before aging a minimum of four years. Sold at a healthy 85 proof, the expression will be made available exclusively in one-liter bottles with a suggested retail price of $21.99.
The brand says to expect flavors of caramel, vanilla and Honeycrisp apple right at home within whiskey cocktails like the old fashioned and boulevardier.
“Green River 1885 was blended with classic cocktails in mind, and is the ideal combination of flavor and value,” Caryn Wells, National Brand Ambassador for Green River Distilling Co. said in a news release. “Like all Green River products, we honor our history while presenting bourbons that are relevant to what and how people drink today. It’s awfully easy to say on your next cocktail order, ‘make mine an ’85.”
Though $21.99 for a one-liter bottle might sound like a suspiciously good deal, we'll note that previous budget-friendly releases from the brand — including its Straight Rye and Wheated Bourbon — have tasted flat-out fantastic. Green River Single Barrel Full Proof Bourbon is another exemplar in the portfolio, though admittedly a smidge more expensive than its usual fare.
Green River's 1885 founding date makes it the 10th-oldest licensed distillery in the state of Kentucky. Despite the impressive feat, the premises haven't been open for much of that time; production shut down in 1918 after a fire burned down the distillery, commencing operations nearly a century later in 2016. In 2022, the imprint was bought by Bardstown Bourbon Company and officially reintroduced to the market.
Those hoping to find Green River 1885 can pick it up in Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee, Michigan, Texas, Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia. For more information, find the distiller's website here.
