Clase Azul, the industry leader in glitzy, ostentatiously priced tequila, has unveiled a range of bottles inspired by one of the most expensive cities in the world. Brace your wallet.
On Friday, the brand unveiled "The Loft Brooklyn Collection," a set of 1,000 1-liter decanters now available for purchase in New York City by invitation only. In keeping with the brand's elaborate theming, each bottle features a smattering of micro-sized luxury details. Its turquoise color scheme pays homage to the Statue of Liberty, while its Art Deco-inspired finish reinterprets the iconic Chrysler Building in the heart of Manhattan. Topping it off, you'll find a hammered copper cap that imitates the rusting oxidized metal seen on many Big Apple skyscrapers.
The lucky few who receive invitations — criteria, currently unclear — can expect to pay $1,250 per bottle, according to the brand. It should be noted that a handful of retailers claiming to distribute the Brooklyn Collection have already popped up online, hawking price tags ranging from $6,999 to $7,999.
The tequila within is an añejo aged 20 months in ex-American whiskey casks before finishing in barrels that previously contained Calvados, an apple brandy produced in Normandy, France. Clase Azul hasn't detailed any tasting notes apart from a vague "smooth and complex" palate.
Perhaps tasting notes aren't really the point. Since launching in 2000, Clase Azul's iconic blue-and-white reposado has established itself as a singular symbol of luxury, often lugged out at the club surrounded by sparklers or paraded around by eager celebrities on Instagram. Capitalizing on the hype, the brand has since released a steady stream of limited-edition bottlings featuring extravagant ornamentation. Over the past year, Clase Azul has rolled out a craftwork-inspired mezcal ($370), Día de Los Muertos añejo ($1,450) and a 24-karat gold accented ensemble ($5,500).
